Worldcoin operates through three primary layers:
World ID
A digital identity credential that allows users to verify that they are unique individuals. Verification is performed through an in-person biometric scan. Personal biometric data is not stored by the protocol; instead, a mathematical representation is used to generate a zero-knowledge proof.
The Orb
A hardware device used to confirm a user’s uniqueness by scanning their iris. The Orb creates a hash used to generate a World ID. According to project documentation, biometric images are not stored after processing.
World App and Worldcoin Network
The World App enables users to interact with World ID, manage eligible digital assets, and access certain features provided by third-party services. It also supports on-chain functions on networks integrated with Worldcoin.
Governance
Holders of $WLD may participate in protocol governance processes. Governance may relate to decisions about network parameters or protocol development. Holding $WLD does not confer ownership, profit rights, or equity in Tools for Humanity or any affiliated entity.
1. Digital identity verification
World ID is intended to support applications that require human verification, such as online authentication, platform access control, and anti-bot measures.
2. Biometric uniqueness
The Orb enables one-time verification to establish that each user represents a unique individual.
3. Privacy considerations
World ID uses zero-knowledge proofs to allow users to demonstrate personhood without sharing biometric data.
4. Token functionality
$WLD is used for governance and certain features within the protocol. The token’s availability or distribution may vary by jurisdiction.
5. Developer tools
Developers can integrate World ID into external applications for identity verification and related functions.
- It is one of the first large-scale digital identity systems combining biometrics and cryptography.
- It uses zero-knowledge proofs to support privacy-preserving verification.
- World ID is designed to provide a technical method for distinguishing humans from automated systems.
- Governance is intended to transition over time toward a more decentralised model through community input.
Governance
$WLD tokens may be used to participate in governance processes relating to aspects of the protocol. Governance rights do not include ownership of Tools for Humanity or entitlements to revenue.
Token distribution
Worldcoin has a fixed maximum supply of 10 billion WLD. Token allocation is divided among community incentives, the foundation, contributors, and ecosystem development. Distribution schedules are set out in the project’s public documentation.
Non-equity nature
Holding $WLD does not provide:
- Equity or shares
- Rights to profits or dividends
- Claims on the assets or income of any entity
- Any guarantee of future token utility
Jurisdictional restrictions
The availability of $WLD varies by country. In some regions, including the United States, WLD may not be available for purchase or distribution.
Worldcoin was launched in 2023 with the stated aim of creating a global identity and digital infrastructure system capable of verifying human uniqueness in online environments. The project integrates biometric verification with blockchain-based identity credentials. Since launch, Worldcoin has expanded globally, with Orb verification stations deployed in various countries, subject to local regulatory requirements.
$WLD can be bought or sold on cryptocurrency exchanges that support the token, subject to regional regulations.
Users typically need to:
- Create an account with a supported exchange
- Complete identity verification (KYC)
- Deposit funds
- Trade $WLD on supported markets
Availability is jurisdiction-dependent, and some users may not be eligible to acquire $WLD based on local laws or restrictions.
