What Is Cosmos (ATOM)?

The Cosmos Hub is the foundational blockchain of the "Internet of Blockchains." It serves as a central router and security provider for the wider ecosystem. Using the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, the Hub enables independent blockchains to transfer data and assets trustlessly. The network secures itself and connected chains using Interchain Security (ICS), which allows validators to validate multiple blockchains simultaneously using the same stake.

Major Protocol Developments (2024–2026)

The Hub has recently evolved its security model and economic capabilities to support a more flexible interchain economy:

Partial Set Security (PSS) Launch: In 2025, the Hub upgraded from "Replicated Security" to Partial Set Security (PSS). This model allows "Consumer Chains" (like Neutron or Stride) to be secured by a subset of the Hub's validators (either a "Top N" mandatory set or an Opt-in set). This reduces the operational burden on smaller validators while allowing new chains to launch with customized security budgets.

Hydro Platform: The ecosystem launched Hydro, a bidding and governance platform on the Hub. Hydro allows projects to bid for liquidity deployment from the Hub’s treasury, creating an "ATOM Wars" dynamic where liquidity is efficiently allocated to the most promising ecosystem protocols.

Tokenomics Overhaul Initiative (Late 2025): In November 2025, the community formally launched a research initiative to redesign ATOM’s economic model. The objective is to transition from an inflation-centric model to a fee-based revenue model, where value accrual is tied directly to cross-chain activity and Interchain Security fees.

Token Utility & Governance

The ATOM token serves as the primary capital asset of the Interchain:

Interchain Security: Staked ATOM secures not just the Hub, but multiple Consumer Chains. Stakers earn staking rewards and transaction fees from all secured chains (e.g., earning NTRN, STRD, and ATOM simultaneously).

Governance: ATOM holders vote on Hub upgrades, the admission of new Consumer Chains, and the allocation of the Community Pool.

Collateral: ATOM is widely used as the primary collateral asset in Cosmos-based DeFi protocols (e.g., Umee, Osmosis).
